Prosthodontics to the rescue!

How we restore the beauty, function, and health of your smile

Today, dentists like our own Drs Laurel and Paul Morello have state-of-the-art knowledge, science, and technologies to replace a portion (or all) of a tooth in a way that mimics the “design” and structure of a healthy natural tooth. No tooth functions as well or looks as great as a natural tooth free of dental disease or other trauma. So, we try to preserve as much of the natural tooth as possible or closely replicate the natural tooth in form and function. This results in a strong tooth structure built to last and satisfied patients at the office of Laurel Morello, DDS, in El Cajon, California.

Prosthodontics, defined

“Prostho” refers to “replacement,” while “dontics” refers to “teeth.” So, tooth structures that replace natural teeth fall under the category of prosthodontics. Likewise, prosthodontics also refers to those treatments or appliances that support healthy oral and maxillofacial tissues; for instance, we may recommend splints, bite guards, or mouthguards to ease the stress that is placed on the jaw joints and teeth from behaviors like chronic teeth-grinding. Mouthguards are also designed at our office to fit athletes’ mouths perfectly and to protect the teeth, jaw, head, and neck from injuries by absorbing the force from contact during sports activities.

A world of options

There are many ways that a tooth, supportive gum tissue, and other oral structures can deteriorate over time or be damaged. So, as you might imagine, there are also many ways to build up those damaged structures. Drs Morello can evaluate your needs and discuss your preferences to determine if you can benefit from the following options:

  • Cosmetic improvement – A tooth may be intact and functional yet still need prosthodontic care. For instance, wear and tear can alter a tooth’s shape and “height.” So, we may recommend replacing the damaged enamel with dental ceramics such as porcelain. These options include both direct veneers (bonding) and indirect veneers (porcelain veneers).
  • Restorative care – If damage threatens the structural integrity of a tooth, dental materials may be prepared and applied to restore its appearance, function, and health. Dental restorations range from tooth-colored fillings to dentures. Dentures may be removable, held in place with suction or adhesive products, or “fixed” with dental implants “rooted” in the jaw.
  • Oral appliance therapy – An entire category of prosthodontics is designed to slip into your mouth. They’re made from lightweight materials that are customized to your unique specifications. These appliances may adjust the jaws to a more optimal position, which combats problems like snoring. They are also developed to protect the teeth and oral structures from the forces placed on them from conditions such as bruxism (chronic teeth-grinding).
